Infertility and… Business?

Here’s a rant for you, just to get a little something off my chest.

I am 1 in 8. 1 in 8 couples suffer from infertility. But wait, that can’t be right. 65% of women who suffer from ‘infertility’ go on to have a baby. So they aren’t actually infertile at all, and in reality should never use the term ‘infertility,’ and instead should refer to their struggles as ‘fertility issues.’ So then I’m not 1 in 8. I’m actually 1 in 25. (Husband corrected my math 🙈)

Now that we’ve got our facts straight, let’s talk about how hard it is to be a woman in business, on social media. IT’S HARD. REALLY, REALLY HARD.

You aren’t just judged by your product now, but also by how much time you devote to interactions with others, how many followers you have, and sadly, whether you are a mother or not. If you’re not using the #wahm (work at home mom) and #sahm (stay at home mom) hashtags, you’re losing out on some of the best influencers on social media.

I will always fall short in this category. I will never be a mother because my husband and I are 1 in 25. It doesn’t matter, our burning desire to have children, it only matters that we don’t have kids and so I don’t have this extra thing that attracts people to view my Instagram feed. Women don’t feel a common bond with me, and most likely won’t take the time to communicate with me, to learn that I probably want kids more than they ever did.

How can I compete with a group of #sahm makers, who constantly talk about how they gave up everything to stay at home with their kids, and started this successful small business to make sure their kids still have everything they deserve? I can’t. I just can’t compete.

Of course I’ll continue to try. But seriously, how can I compete with a woman who supposedly sacrificed everything for her kids? End of rant.

    I completely understand where you are coming from, in more ways than you probably realize. How about marketing to those that, also, are 1 in 3 or 1 in 8? That could end up being your greatest market since they can relate to you. It’s a struggle either way, but come up with a catchy hash tag that makes sense to those that are going through similar situations and you just might have yourself a new demographic. Anywho, you know we support you! 😉
